Bernese mountain dogs are confident, good-natured and friendly, and therefore good domestic and farm dogs and popular family dogs. They also have a strong guarding instinct without being aggressive. However, Bernese mountain dogs aren’t suitable for dog sports that require agility and speed. They are better suited to drafting work, rescue dog or tracking dog training, and areas where some sort of anticipatory obedience is required. They need lots of freedom to move. Hot weather makes them uncomfortable because of their long, dense coat. They therefore feel most comfortable in winter and in cool or frosty conditions.
