But even the best shepherds had problems driving sheep to the fields, so they sought the help of sheepdogs.
During the day they worked as herding dogs and at night they guarded the house and farm.
Today there are only a few German Shepherds that live up to their name.
They are more likely to be used as service dogs by the police, as avalanche search dogs or even as guide dogs.
