TREX.PARTS Wear gauge for flyer chains
Technical data:
The wear ruler is used to check the length or wear of flyer and roller chains.

The test is prescribed for industrial trucks according to the UVV in the principles ZH 1/306 (edition 10/1980).

The measurement should be based on at least 17 double links=
34 pitches in the working area of the chain.

Handling the chain ruler:

The pitch of the chain is determined using the pitch mark on the ruler. Once the pitch of the chain to be tested has been determined, 34 pitches are then marked on the chain. The gauge is given by the ruler for each pitch of 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 1". If the chain in operation has elongated by more than one pitch above the initial dimension, the chain must be replaced. In this case, the pitch or initial dimension comprises only 33 or fewer chain pitches, which corresponds to a chain elongation of approx. 3%.

Technical data:
How do I know if I need to replace my roller or leaf chains?

Leaf chains and roller chains must be replaced when the chains have elongated by 2-3%. They can then no longer be used safely, as the fatigue strength and minimum breaking force are greatly reduced from this wear value. From 3% wear in length, flyer and roller chains must be replaced absolutely and quickly, as they have less operational safety and no longer have any safety against shock loads or overloading.

Operating instructions:

Step 1

Close the chain wear gauge to check calibration Close the slider and check the "Elongation %" window. If the arrow does not fall in the middle of the ± zone, the chain wear gauge should no longer be used because it cannot give accurate measurement results. If the "V-jaws" are damaged, the chain wear gauge will also not give an accurate measurement result.

Step 2

Determine the chain pitch Position the arrows at the pin centres of the outer links and the nominal pitch will be visible in the "Pitch" window - either on one side or the other of the chain wear gauge depending on the pitch. The number of pins over which to measure will be visible in the "Measurement over pins" window.

Step 3

Select the correct side of the chain wear gauge Please select the correct side of the chain wear gauge according to the following selectable values. SCALE A: Pitch: ⅜“ ⁄ ½“ ⁄ ⅝“ ⁄ ¾“ ⁄ 1“ ⁄ 1¼“ ⁄ 1½ ⁄ 2 ½“ ⁄ 3“ SCALE B: Pitch: 1¾" ⁄ 2”
Step 4

Measure the chain. The chain must be clean and measured under a load of approximately 1% of the breaking force. If tensioning weights are not available, it is sufficient if the chains are pre-tensioned under normal tension by the weight of the conveyed material or the forks. For leaf chains, measure mainly the area of the chain that always runs over the idler pulley, because this is the most informative. Take at least 3 measurements in this area. Position the first "V-jaw" on the first pin of the selected measuring range and pull out the bar until the second "V-jaw" reaches the pin determined by the scale (e.g. 21).

Read the chain elongation in % Check the "Elongation %" window. A percentage will be visible in 0.25% increments. If the chain wear gauge shows a wear of 2% or greater, the window is completely filled with red. This is a warning that the chain needs to be replaced.
